From the Bloomsbury Group, to the glamorous group of American expats in Paris after WWII, to the Beat Generation and the artists that were collectively known as the New York School in the 1950’s – writers and artists have a long history together. So this year the York Art Association will be exhibiting The Image and The Word. For this exhibition, members of YAA were asked to create a piece of artwork inspired by words – either poetry or prose. These passages, verses and quotes will be displayed next to the corresponding piece of artwork.
Portsmouth artist Katherine Baucke will be judging the show. Baucke has an MFA from the University of California, Davis and has gone on to teach at many universities and colleges. Baucke is an award-winning artist. Her work resides in both private and state collections. Baucke’s most current work was inspired by the thousands of drawings and writing she has amassed through journaling for almost forty years.
Exhibition hours will be Thursday and Friday from 12:00 to 4:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 to 4:00. Members will be encouraged to give readings of the poetry or prose that inspired their art at the opening. Please join us for this fusion of writing and art.
