After a dreary winter devoid of color, we kick off our 2017 season with a celebration of GREEN.  From soft greens to green patinas to a luscious verdant green, this show will be an explosion that will thrust us into spring.  Consider alternative modes of green...  recycled, found objects used in art, or re-purposed objects made into art.

Artists can drop off their work on FEBRUARY 26 and 27, and pick it up on April 1 and 2, 4-6pm.

The theme for April is a playful one. Shapes are the focus. We will welcome art that highlights particular or unique shapes or forms that strike your fancy. Or pieces that invite us to find their underlying shapes. They can be geometric, biomorphic, organic, ink blots, blobs and such. ( My committee gave me such a vocabulary!) Shapes as nature displays them or as your imagination builds with them. This description is not meant to suggest limits but to encourage you to be free. Be serious or whimsical. In any medium. Surprise and delight us. Opening Reception April 7, 5-7PM.

    Y.A.Y! DAY: SPRING

    "Diving In To Shapes"

    Friday, April 21, 2017
    9:00 am - 1:00 pm

2D, 3D, Color, Shapes, Poetry and Music

Art Session #1:  Yarn Bottles - Explore color and shapes in 3 dimensions. The Mexican Huichol Indians are the last North American tribe to still continue in their pre-Columbian traditions. They use yarn to decorate gourds, clothing and other items in rows or other patterns of color. We'll apply yarn to up-cycled bottles to create beautiful vases, containers or whatever your imagination takes you.

    Shape-y Snack Break

Art Session #2:  Chenille Stem Stitchery - World-renowned artist, Joan Miró is known for his child-like, playful art. For Miró, poetry and painting were the same. Using chenille stems and stitch canvas, students will create their own abstract, playful illustrations that they'll then be challenged to put into words of their own poem.

    Lunch Break

Visualizing Music in Color and Shape:  A Group Project - Immerse yourself visually into a select set of music, recognizing patterns. Students will be challenged to identify what colors and shapes the sounds evoke. They will visualize the music as a group creating a single, colorful, patterned work created only with simple shapes.

*Drop off from 8:30 am-9:00 am
    *Bring a bagged lunch
    *Ages 8+

    Registration:
YAA Members:  $20 for the day

Taking better photos with your smartphone

The objective of this three-hour class is to demonstrate some of the features of smartphones that can result in higher quality images.  We will start off with a discussion of the features and options included in the camera app on common smartphones.  Then we’ll go outside and practice using those features.  We’ll shoot indoors if it is raining.  The class will finish with a discussion on how you can post-process your photos right in your phone to improve the images.

Tom Gilmore started Tom Gilmore Photography:  Landscapes and Wildlife, after retiring from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.  Locally, his favorite places to photograph are the forests and rivers protected by the several land trusts in York County.  His favorite locations outside of Maine are in Alaska, especially the Brooks Range mountains in the Arctic.  He serves on the Boards of Directors of the Great Works Regional Land Trust and the Sanford Art Association.  His images can be seen on Facebook, at www.TomGilmore.Photography, and often at the Sanford and York Art Associations’ galleries.
